When you're involved in a long interview process with multiple interviews don't discount a single interview no matter how trivial they may seem.
Sometimes it's especially easy to dismiss the importance of an initial screening interview. Screening interviews can seem rather trivial. Many times the interviewer is a new and young staff member or a 3rd party recruiter with not that much information on the position specifics, or any other person that causes you to feel that screening call doesn't carry much weight.
If you write off the importance of the initial screen - as Rob Halford of Judas Priest says - you got another thing comin'!
In the case of third party recruiters, I may not always have the position specifics, but I do know very clearly the personality types that my client companies are looking for. If you approach it non-chalantly, I will pick up on that and you probably won't ever get a chance to talk with my client.
When you have a first conversation directly with a company it's important not to guess whose on the other line with you. One of my clients has one of their big wigs do the initial phone screen. How about that? If you treat that one as not, you can kiss that job good bye. And I've seen a few candidates do that.
It doesn't matter what the situation. In some companies, the new and young kid is the owner's son or daughter. Uh, oh!
It doesn't matter who's on the end of the call, an interview is an interview and should be treated as such. Dismiss any interview along the way and you'll most likely go home never knowing what happened and why you never got a call back.
